Official Match Program 2007

 

The American Legion sponsors a program of marksmanship and gun safety education for high school age youth. As part of the program, The American Legion of Virginia conducts a Junior Three Positions Air Rifle Tournament, which provides shooters an opportunity to test their marksmanship ability in competition with other junior shooters throughout the state.

 

The Individual Tournament has two phases of competition: Regional Qualification Round and State Championship.

 

Both phases of the Tournament are shoulder-to-shoulder competition.

The Tournaments will be conducted in accordance with this Official Match Program (OMP) and the National Standard Three-Position Air Rifle Rules.

 

Who May Compete

Sponsorship:

Entry in tournament is limited to shooters who are active members of a Junior Shooting Club sponsored by an American Legion Post, Unit or Squadron.

 

AGE Limits:

Competitors who have reached their 18th birthday or a graduate of high school, class of 2006 and those younger are eligible to compete.

 

Teams:

A team is composed of four firing members who represent the same Junior Shooting Club.

 

Clubs may enter up to ten shooters for the regional Tournaments but only four will advance to the State May match.

 

Other Limitations: Four top scores will be used for a team score.

 

Individual Tournament: The top three in each position and overall will advance to the State Match in May. The three top scoring teams will be invited to the state match. In the event that the Fourth place score at another regional is higher than a third place finisher that fourth place winner will receive an invite. This will be for all shooting position competition.

 

Sporter Air Rifle Category: as described in National Standard Three-Position Air Rifle rule 4.2 with the following limitations:

 

Sights: As described in National Standard Three-Position Air Rifle Rule 4.2.7 (Sporter). The sight must be factory issue for the Sporter air rifle being used. Telescopic sights are not permitted.

 

A Precision air rifle CANNOT be modified in any way in order for it to comply as a Sporter Air Rifle.

 

Co2 Air rifle competitors are responsible to supply their own refills.

 

Course of Fire:

The State/Regional Championship level of this air rifle match will consist of 30 rounds for record (3x10) fired at ten (10) meters (33 feet).

 

Ten rounds from the prone position.

 

Ten rounds from the standing position.

 

Ten rounds from the kneeling position.

 

The 10-meter Air Rifle Target AR 5/10 will be sued at all rounds of the tournament.

 

Clothing:

Sporter Air Rifle: As specified in the National Standard Three-Position Air Rifle Rule 4.3. All shooting clothing must be made of soft, flexible, pliable material, which does not give artificial support to the shooter. No special shooting jackets or pants are allowed.

 

How to Enter:

Clubs/teams must be affiliated with The American Legion Junior Shooting Sports Program. There is no cost to affiliate. Information regarding affiliation is available from http://www.va16thdistrict.org Junior Shooting Sports.

Will be posted at the end of the Regional and after the State match.

Recognition and Awards:

Department Championship (Individual Tournament): Awards will be presented in each of the three positions and overall high scores as well as the three high scoring teams.  The top seven overall shooters will advance to a 10-round shoot-off from the standing position; the shoot-off is fired and the scores are not added to the earlier match scores, Saving Bonds are award with Medallions to the top five.

 

The Department Team Award: Medallions will be presented to of each team member and a plaque to the coach.

 

Phases of the Tournament:

Regional Championships

If you cannot make it to your regional contest and the other regions contest has room you may travel to that region. The out of region team will score for their region and cannot represent the host region.

 

Example:  Team A from the west goes to the northern region tournament has a score that is number two at the contest but is lower than the third place team from the west competition. Team A would be a wildcard from the west but three northern teams would still advance.
