The gun ban majority has introduced a bill in the House of Delegates to impose a $500 tax on the sale of suppressors in Virginia. House Bill 207 reads:
§ 58.1-664. Firearm suppressor tax.A. In addition to all other taxes and fees of every kind now imposed by law, beginning on July 1, 2026, an excise tax is hereby imposed upon dealers in firearms at the rate of $500 per retail sale in the Commonwealth of any firearm suppressor. No discount under § 58.1-622 shall be allowed for the fee imposed under this chapter.B. The tax imposed by this chapter shall not apply to the retail sale of any firearm suppressor to any federal, state, or local agency or to a law-enforcement officer for use in the normal course of his employment.C. The Department shall distribute the proceeds received from the tax imposed by this chapter to the general fund.
This is 150% higher than the now repealed federal NFA tax that had been imposed on suppressors and is clearly intended to discourage the purchase of the firearm accessory. While some gun control has been introduced ahead of the start of the session, this is the first of the really bad bills that are expected to be introduced this session. The Democrats have held off on the gun ban and licensing schemes they plan to implement hoping to lull gun owners into a sense of complacency ahead of the annual VCDL Lobby Day on January 19. VSSA is encouraging all gun owners to attend Lobby Day and make your voice heard.
